The Maplewood Chamber of Commerce held its annual dinner on June 15, 2018 at Orange Lawn Tennis Club in South Orange. It conferred the Distinguished Service Award on Sarah Lester, who has served as director of the Maplewood Memorial Library since 2012. In her role as Director, Sarah is committed to ensuring that all Maplewood residents have free and equal access to the information, services, programs and collections available through the library. Under her leadership the Maplewood Library launched the annual Ideas Festival and Maplewood Literary Award, created a digital archive of local history materials and strengthened the Library’s standing by joining the BCCLS consortium of 75 libraries in Northern New Jersey.

Sarah initiated plans, currently underway, to create a renovated and expanded 21st century library that will be accessible, inspiring and technologically advanced, that will serve the Maplewood community for years to come.

Sarah started her career at the New York Public Library, honed her skills as a reference librarian at the Marin County Free Library, served as a manager of three branches of the San Francisco Public Library and was previously the director of the Nutley Free Public Library. Sarah has a B.A. from Vassar College and received her masters of library and information science from San Jose State University.

Sarah is a proud member of the Maplewood Chamber of Commerce and serves on the Maplewood Arts Council. She is also an active member of the American Library Association and the New Jersey Library Association. She is an avid runner and has completed 8 marathons around the country. Sarah lives in Maplewood with her husband Chris Schabacker and her children, William, Lila and Alice.
