On October 24, the Maplewood Library hosted the Chamber of Commerce for a lunch event. Library director Sarah Lester led participants through the many research databases and resources that library card holders can access for free, many from the comfort of their homes or offices. These resources can help business owners with creating a business plan, finding businesses to target with offers, writing a resume, researching a prospective employer and business competitors. For example, Lester showed how a business can target new movers by delving into the layers of one of the databases that the library subscribes to.
Chamber member Juan Pablo Chamorro spoke about how he used the library’s databases when he was considering opening his CertaPro franchise. Several years into his business he used their resources for business development so his salespeople could target hotels. This proved to be a worthwhile endeavor.
Barbara Laub, the library’s head of Adult Services and Technology, delved deeper into resources that businesses can use such as the Small Business Reference Center, Legal Information Reference Center, Consumer Reports, Business Source Elite, and digital archives such as The News-Record, real estate records and CHS year books.
The Chamber is grateful to the library for hosting the luncheon as well as Wooley Home Solutions for providing the lunch and True Salvage Cafe for the scrumptious cookies. The next Chamber event is a lunch on Wednesday, November 28, featuring a Business Book Camp. Stay tuned for the location. Anyone wishing to sponsor the luncheon, please contact Lorraine Labonne-Storch.
